For those who know Birtley House Nursing Home, you may not be aware of the expanse of Woodlands tucked away around the house, and the lively community that is within your reach, an amalgamation of local artisans from in and around Surrey. At the gates you will be greeted by a Cow Parade Cow, named Liberty (an anagram for Birtley), and as you approach the house you will notice a most wonderful woodland that has been developed in the grounds of the house for both residents and visitors to the home.
There are so many activities available for both adults and children to escape our busy digital focused world, including stone carving, yoga, sacred drumming, traditional wood-working, pyrography, arts and crafts and more. What is so wonderful though is the offerings for children to develop outdoor skills, such as traditional bush craft, tool carving, tree climbing, den building to mention just a few. Another area which is being developed is an outdoor Forest School which should be open in late summer, and you can also participate in activities with SHAC – Surrey Hills Adventure Company – who run activities in open water swimming, raft building, mountain biking and even ‘Supping’ AKA Stand up Paddle boarding, SUP in particular is very popular, and you will find Sunday morning sessions running throughout June on the Birtley Estate.
It is well worth checking out for both adults and children – and with the long summer holidays looming it’s a great way to get kids outdoors and learning new skills, making a true break from the digital world. Birtley and the woodland artisans celebrated a soft launch, with a Birtley House Resident cutting the ribbon. Later in the year an official open day is expected with all the artisans present, watch this space. For more information head to www.birtleyhouse.co.uk/events
