Film and TV star James Cosmo MBE, one of the UK’s busiest actors, today visited the Fountain Centre (Guildford’s local cancer charity), where he is a Patron. He was delighted to receive a cheque for £13,300 from Gary and Manjit Smith. Gary Smith is Master of the masonic Lodge of Perfect Harmony, and the members of the Lodge had selected the Fountain Centre as their Charity of the Year 2019. Gary Smith said: “We have had a very enjoyable year raising funds for the Fountain Centre, with a Bollywood garden party, a Ska and Reggae concert and a Gala Dinner amongst other events. Most of the members live in and around the Staines and Ashford area, so we were particularly happy to be able to support the plans the Fountain Centre has to develop its services at Ashford Hospital.”
James Cosmo said: “I am really pleased to be back at the Fountain Centre – work has kept me away too long! I can see they are going from strength to strength, thanks to the support they receive from donors from all over Surrey. Gary and his fellow masons have raised a magnificent amount”.
Martin Read, Chairman of Trustees, explained: “The Fountain Centre has been providing support and complementary therapies for patients at St Luke’s Cancer Centre for 21 years now. We have facilities at the Royal Surrey for those who can come to us, but we have always wanted to extend our services to other facilities in Surrey. We have been in negotiation with Ashford Hospital for some time to extend our service to their cancer patients, and this donation will mean that can happen as soon as our arrangements with them are finalised.”
