What better way to spend the extra day of the year than at a night at the races?!
And so it was that, on Saturday 29th February 2020, around 50 members and supporters of the East Surrey Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association attended the Branch’s annual Race Night at Surrey Downs Golf Club.
As well as enjoying an excellent fish and chip supper courtesy of the golf club, everyone present placed bets on a series of eight video horse races shown throughout the evening, with an increasingly electric atmosphere of excitement and expectation as the lights went down at the start of each race and an equally increasing level of volume towards the end of each race as ‘punters’ cheered their horses on to the finish line!
A raffle at the event helped to raise almost £700, which will help the Branch continue its vital care and support to local people living with Motor Neurone Disease.
Branch Chairman, Simon Edmands, thanked everyone for supporting the event, adding “It was a great night out, with a fantastic amount raised, and it’s definitely odds on that we’ll be organising it yet again next year!”
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a rapidly progressive terminal condition which kills, on average, six people every day in the UK. It can leave people unable to walk, talk or even feed themselves, whilst their mind and senses invariably remain unaffected. Average life expectancy from diagnosis is just fourteen months and, as yet, there is no cure or effective treatment.
The East Surrey Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) provides care and support to around 60 people living with MND throughout the East Surrey area, as well as helping to fund vital research into the disease itself.
