Belmont School Secures Planning Permission for Senior School

Belmont School, in Holmbury St Mary, is pleased to announce that it has secured planning permission for its new Senior School.  The announcement follows on from the independent school’s successful application to extend its education provision from 13 years to 16 years.  The decision to extend what was previously known as Belmont Preparatory School was approved in May 2019 following an inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate and prior approval from the Department of Education.

As part of its expansion plans, Belmont School will be investing £5 million and increasing both staff and facilities.  The new Senior School will provide seven new classrooms, an extensive glass atrium, IT suite, two double height Art Rooms, a Photography Department and a Performance Studio for drama, dance and the performing arts along with tutorial rooms and office space.

In addition to the new Senior School building, Belmont School will add a new Design Technology Suite and two new Science laboratories.  It will also increase its sporting facilities as part of the investment programme with a new astro turf for multi sports, netball court, weights room and a Physical Education teaching classroom and off-site football and cricket pitches in Holmbury St Mary.  The Head’s house will be demolished to accommodate the new Senior School and its replacement will be constructed elsewhere on the 65-acre site.

Mrs Skrine says of the expansion, “We are delighted that planning permission has come through and that we can expand to deliver GCSE teaching.  Of course, an outstanding school such as Belmont, is not only about facilities, but about opportunity, relationships and excellent teaching and learning.  Nevertheless, this is an exciting period in the School’s history, which we hope will not only benefit the whole school but members of the local community too”.

Building work will commence at Easter.  Currently Belmont teaches pupils up to Year 8 and from September will welcome its first Year 9 pupils.  There will be a gradual progression to GCSE provision, with Years 10 and 11 being added in subsequent years.
