Next Steps Surrey virtual event gives GCSE students and their parents/carers a chance to find out more about their next steps. It will allow them to ‘meet’ local education providers, find out more about apprenticeships and hear from employers.
On the 24th November there will be two events: at the first between 1.30pm and 3pm students can chat with representatives from colleges, sixth forms, universities, apprenticeship providers and employers. The event will run again in the evening for parents and carers to view video content and ask their questions between 6pm and 7.30pm.
SATRO and Coast to Capital Careers Hub are working together with Learn Live to bring this exciting new event to learners from across the region.
Lisa Mobbs, Enterprise Adviser Network & Careers Hub Lead, Coast to Capital:
“Now, more than ever, it’s so important that young people are fully aware of all of the ‘next steps’ available to them. We hope that every Year 11 pupil and their parents and carers across Surrey will join the live broadcast to hear from FE and HE providers, Apprentices and local Employers. Next Steps Surrey is intended to help young people to feel informed and inspired about their future.”
Anne Edward, Managing Director of SATRO, organiser of the event said: ”
It has never been more important in these uncertain times to support students understand their career options and give them hope for the future. At SATRO we encourage them to challenge perceptions in career pathways and inspire their skills development and learning through our work in schools. This generation are acutely aware of what it means to be a global citizen and their role in tackling key issues for our planet’s future whether that be climate change, sustainability, equality or fairness within our society. We are pleased to be helping them decide their next steps.”
Quote from Jim Glover, Pro-Chancellor, University of Surrey:
“Future educational responses to the lessons learnt during the current pandemic will drive huge opportunities for students contemplating their next steps after GCSE’s. New thinking allows new approaches.
To students: as society’s most valuable assets, don’t be driven along the usual discreet tramlines of sixth form vs university vs college vs apprenticeship vs employment etc. As citizens of the future, try this approach:
• Consider what inspires you;
• Recognise your talents;
• Identify the skills you have, and where that learning gave you the greatest satisfaction and enjoyment; • Then look to see what combination of HE/FE/Apprenticeship, work opportunities will allow you to excel!
• Unless you have certainty about the role you wish to have in the workplace, don’t worry too much about identifying a particular job – the perfect one for you has quite likely not yet been created; but it will be!”
