On May 1st 2019 I visited The Wheatsheaf for lunch, as soon as I walked in I was amazing at how big the pub was, for being situated in the heart of Farnham and on one of the main streets, from the moment you walked inside off the road, it felt as if you were in the countryside.
The interior is decorated in neutral colours and skylights speckled across the roof allowing the sunlight to pour in gives the pub an airy and spacious feel. As soon as I arrived, I was shown to my table, the waitress brought over some nice ice-cold water immediately. A couple of our party had not been since the new menu had launched; the waitress showed great knowledge in explaining what dishes were new as well as dishes that had new aspects added to the original dish.
To start, we shared a portion of the breaded Mozella sticks, the mozzarella was incased in a crisp herb breadcrumb shell, the textures of the crunchy breaded shell complimented the soft melted cheese in the middle, the sticks were also serves with a garlic and thyme aioli along with a side of rocket that had a sweet balsamic glaze. The aioli had a lovely strong flavor and encompassed both ingredients well, the hints of thyme worked well with the garlic and the rocket added just the right amount of pepper, softened by the sweetness of the balsamic glaze.
To follow I ordered the parmesan and pine nut crusted chicken supreme, this dish is served on a bed of orzo pasta with spring vegetables and wilted spinach. The pasta was in a vegetable broth that was nicely seasoned, the portion was very generous, the chicken was lovely and moist and the skin of the chicken crispy and well flavored with the parmesan and pine nuts.
Another member of our party chose the 8oz Picanha steak, the dish comes with mixed salad and either skinny fries or crispy thyme new potatoes, she chose the skinny fries and opted to add the salsa Verdi, the waitress had recommended the salsa as it is the perfect accent for the dish, it was well worth the recommendation! The salsa gave the dish different textures, it the ingredients worked well together.
The final member of the party opted for the buttered garlic and herb poussin. This dish was also served with a choice of skinny fries or crispy thyme new potatoes. This time the choice was the crispy new potatoes, again the chicken was well cooked, moist and the skin was packed with flavors of coriander, parsley and garlic, the new potatoes were cooked to perfection, another very generous portion.
To finish, even though none of us needed it, we somehow found a bit of space for a pudding. We decided we would share the warm cherry Bakewell. The tart arrived nice and warm and the almonds on top added lovely smoky flavor to the desert. The tangy berry coulis complimented the sweet tart very well and the fresh raspberries added a nice sweet and cool texture to the desert. It also made us feel healthier as we were having fruit for pudding.
We had a lovely lunch there, the service was second to none, the new menu has such a variety of choices, especially the New Grill Menu. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals and can’t wait to go back again soon. Go and see for yourselves….
