Back in November, VantagePoint’s Jesse Boon visited Mark Hargreaves at the home in Warren Road, Guildford where Pewley Down Vineyard is located. The vineyard is not widely known, as it is much smaller and not nearly as heavily-promoted as many of the larger ones in Surrey.
Having retired after working as a barrister for many years, Mark started Pewley Down Vineyard a few years ago. The vineyard itself is just one acre in size and is planted with classic cool climate varieties of vines producing both red and white grapes. No grapes are bought in or sold to other producers; Pewley Down Vineyard’s wines are made using solely the grapes grown in their own vineyard.
While visiting, Jesse sampled some of the wines and was particularly impressed by the 2017 English Rosé. Hopefully, winter frosts will soon kill any remaining mildew bugs and Mark will see an abundant harvest this autumn.
Pewley Down Vineyard’s wines are not sold directly from the vineyard, but are available at many local stockists:-
