The West Surrey Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers

The West Surrey Guild was started in 1979 by a group of like minded people who enjoyed the crafts of spinning, weaving and dyeing and wished to share their skills and joys with everyone and anyone. Since then, 100’s of members and visitors have enjoyed learning and practising the ancient arts of Spinning, Weaving and Dyeing.

Today, members of the Guild participate in many local and national events throughout the year. They can be found at the Surrey County Show, The Cranleigh Show, the Farnham Carnival and many village fêtes and events throughout the borough, demonstrating their Spinning and Weaving skills with a variety of wheels, spindles and looms – and inviting visitors of all ages to join in and ‘have a go’.

This year they are also holding a special event – Market Day on 22nd of October in the United Reform Church Hall, South Street, Farnham. Many well-known traders will be there and all textile enthusiasts are most welcome.

Their monthly meetings are held at the United Reformed Church Hall, 21 South Street, Farnham GU9 7QU on alternate Monday evenings at 7.30pm and Tuesday mornings at 10.30am. Meetings are free to members or a £3 visitors entry fee which includes tea or coffee and biscuits.

Each month they have a speaker on a wide range of textile related topics. Earlier this year Pat Foster took us on a very exciting tour along the Silk Road, covering both the past and the present day and later in the year, Liz Beasley will be talking on the distinctive work created by The Mapuche Weavers of Chile. The next meeting will be on Monday 11th July at 7.30pm. The speaker will be Frances Mason on Linden Angora and Needle Felting.

The meeting in June was Show and Tell, where members bring along their latest project or work in progress to ’show and tell’ and have a friendly chat about how it did – or didn’t work – or just enjoy hearing about others experiences. It’s always a fun meeting where everyone from experienced spinners and weavers to beginners learn such a lot from each other.

The Guild also holds Craft Days at various venues from 10.30am-3pm where you can spin and weave – and where there will be someone to help, if needed.

On the first Monday and second Wednesday of each month they meet at Victoria Halls, Ash Hill Road Ash GU10 5DNk.

On the third Monday of each month in the Village Hall at the Rural Life Museum at Reeds Road Tilford GU10 2DL – and during the summer months they also meet in Tilford on the first Sunday and fourth Saturday each month from 10.30am until around 3pm or 4pm.
