Hidden Historic Hamburger Happiness

The Kings Arms and Royal.

Originally built in the 17th century, the Kings Arms & Royal Hotel is a grand historic building. The hotel has seen several famous faces during its many years of trading, including Henry VIII and Peter the Great. The name of the hotel is due to Henry VIII staying there – the ‘Kings Arms and Royal’ Peter the Great inspired much of the décor and his menu still hangs in the hotel today.

There is a 1920s themed restaurant and plenty of different styles of seating dotted throughout the spacious lounge areas. They have 20 boutique bedrooms, all lavishly decorated in their own individual style. From some there are views of the river Wey. There are function rooms available for booking for business meetings or social occasions. Since the beginning of 2019 the hotel began sourcing its beer range only from local breweries.

On Saturday afternoon as I ambled along a bustling Godalming high street I thought I would pop in and grab a spot of lunch. I had heard that the burgers were the best in town, so I wanted to put this to the test, all in the name of research of course!

After looking through several options of burgers, all served on a choice of brioche, pretzel and whole meal buns, I opted for the cheese and bacon burger served on a pretzel bun, I decided to have this served with fries rather than the thicker chips that are also on offer. The burger was a very generous size, the meat was cooked to perfection and very juicy, the salad was crisp and fresh, and the pretzel bun was the perfect addition, the bun wasn’t too big, but the constancy was doughy and almost bagel like. The fries were crispy and again generous in portion size.

I was with my dog that day, so we were allowed in the bar and the outdoor areas. There are a couple of tables situated out front of the hotel as well as a seating area out back. As it was a sunny day we chose to sit outside in the sunshine. The outdoor seating area out back of the hotel was a pleasant surprise as it is hidden and was also nice and quiet, so it is easy to forget that you are sat on Godalming High Street.

I was very impressed with the food and the service that I had at the Kings Arms and Royal. We are planning to go and have a team lunch in there in the next few weeks, the rest of the team have decided, they too, would like to partake in market research in finding the best burger in town!

So far, the cheese and bacon burger on a pretzel bun with fries gets my vote!

Well done Kings Arms and Royal, I can’t wait for my next visit.
