Merrist Wood Golf Course is deemed one of Surrey’s longest golf courses measuring just under 7,000 yards. When played from the back tees the golf course offers a stern challenge for the most accomplished of golfers. The forward tees also provide an excellent test for the less proficient player.
Jesse and I were invited along so that we could experience The Merrist Wood Golf Club. We arrived early so we could grab a bite to eat before we really got into the ‘swing’ of it. We ate lunch in the clubhouse, which has a traditional cosy feel, and large windows that let the natural light flood into the clubhouse. The menu was nice and varied with a huge selection of cold and hot dishes, ranging from starters and light bites to main meals and a wide range of homemade cakes and biscuits to choose from.
Jesse and myself both decided to have a jacket potato, which came with a very generous helping of bacon, with cheese that was melted on top. The food was beautifully presented and the side salad was also fresh, crisp and subtly yet very well dressed with onion and garlic.
Then we were taken out on to the driving range, where Adrian Carter, the Golf Development Professional, was on hand to give myself and Jesse some pointers. He was very patient and made sure he went through things a number of times, from how we gripped the club and the way our posture was, all the way through to us being able to whack the ball a fair distance! We spent a good half an hour out on the driving range and it was lovely to be outside enjoying the fresh air on the beautiful course. As we played, both Jesse and I remarked that we felt our stress levels reducing.
We then moved onto the putting green. This is where I was sure I was going to struggle- as those of you who know me will be aware, I don’t tend to favour the gentle approach to sports. However, Adrian was by our sides, once again, to show us about the grandfather-clock pendulum motion that is needed to gently hit the ball on the putting green.
While we were there we noticed there was a range of players from beginners to professionals and a variety of ages as well. The club had a real sense of community with lots of smiley faces, and Jesse and I were welcomed as if we were regular members, despite it being our first visit. For a weekday lunch the club was nicely full, there seemed to be a fair few groups around the club, playing as well as dining in the clubhouse. The atmosphere of the club was very comforting and there were a number of options to make your membership a lot of affordable, with a “flexible golf membership” as well as various lesson packages and gift vouchers.
We had a lovely afternoon with the Merrist Wood Golf Club team, both in the clubhouse and out on the course. The team were friendly and personable and all very approachable. Whether you are a complete beginner or a professional, get in touch with Merrist Wood and see what they can do ‘fore’ you.
